The Process will set you free
Yes, this may be a bit of an overstatement, but there’s a bit of truth to it as well.
If you work in a large organization, you most likely have established procedures for many of the typical tasks required of the team. If you are in a startup, you’re throwing things against the wall to see what sticks/works. Once this is determined you’ll work on establishing procedures.
The Tuckman model for team development…..forming, storming, norming, performing….. applies equally well to processes and their development. We establish a process, then optimize it over time through brainstorming and practice, and then, once optimized, establish it as the way of doing business.
A discipline that small, growing organizations need to embrace is defining processes. As we grow, we lose our ability to remember everything. Establishing some simple processes helps us stay focused and organized as complexity increases.
A discipline that large organizations need is to question established processes, to reinvent and improve them. There is a time for following procedures and a time for challenging and changing standard conventions.
Do you have a regular “process” for reviewing your processes? You need to know when to hold them and when to fold them .
