Is everyone walking on eggshells around one of your team members?

“I have a very talented employee who I make exceptions for because they don’t always model our values. I don’t know if I could replace them. What should I do?”

I have been in this situation numerous times and have had clients facing this dilemma as well.

Have you ever been in this position as a leader?

Jim Collins, in his book “Good to Great”, talks about getting the right people on the bus as being vital to an organization’s success. The opposing statement is also true……. getting the wrong people off the bus is vital to an organization’s success.

You should never compromise your culture and values by retaining a talented employee who does not walk the walk or talk the talk.

Make it very clear that their conduct will not be tolerated, that you are willing to work with them to address these concerns, but that they will ultimately lose their position if measured changes are not made.

Don’t believe the lie that someone cannot be replaced. They always can be.
